West Hampstead, South Hampstead & Kilburn |
West Hampstead is a diverse and cosmopolitan area lying just north of Maida Vale and St John's Wood. The main thoroughfare of the district is the Edgware Road , which dates back to Roman times when it was the main route from London to Chester . It has a long association with travellers' inns and hostelries, dating back to the 15th century.
By the early 18th century the area had become a fashionable spa resort - the water was said to contain more carbon dioxide than any other waters in England . But it still remained largely undeveloped but once the railway had arrived, the area soon developed into a buzzing residential and commercial area.
Nowadays the district has a multi-cultural feel with, among others, Irish, West Indian and Middle Eastern communities. The architecture in the area comprises substantial red brick houses, and Mansion blocks, palatial red brick victorian houses mainly converted into spacious well presented apartments, luxurious new developments and family houses
Transport links include West Hampstead tube (Jubilee Line), Finchley Road tube (Jubilee & Metropolitan lines) and West Hampstead Thameslink/BR offering fast and direct access to Central London and beyond (including Gatwick Airport).
