Despite its central London position, Bayswater is surprisingly peaceful once the rush hour ends. This area represents a diverse mixture of cultures and are well served by no less than five London Underground stations namely: Bayswater, Queensway, Edgware Road , Paddington and Lancaster Grove. The Heathrow Express train runs from nearby Paddington station (journey time 30 minutes).
Bayswater is named after Bayard's Spring, and a conduit built in the area supplied the city with water from the 15 th century. It didn't develop that quickly because of the presence of the gallows at what is today Marble gave the area something of a fearsome reputation! Although Bayswater's purlieu expanded somewhat in the early 18 th century, it wasn't until the gallows were removed in 1783 that the area really took off.
In the 19 th Century, Bayswater became quite a hip destination. Westbourne Terrace was known as the "finest street in London ", Westbourne Grove and Queensway earned their reputations as great shopping locations which they both still have today.
